Update your iPhone or iPad software over the air OTA

Curious how to update to iOS 5.0.1 — or any future iOS update — over-the-air (OTA) directly on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch? Yes, Apple finally pulled the big test switch in the cloud and you can go from beta 3 to beta 4 via a svelte, under 200mb, bit differential (delta) update-in-place rather than the usual beefy 700MB+ iTunes restore of updates past. We’ll show you how, after the break!

Initiating an OTA update for iOS is really easy. You might see a red notification badge on your Settings app to alert you to an update, or get a popup notification telling you it’s ready to install, but you can always check on your own, at any time.
  1. Launch the Settings app
  2. Tap General
  3. Tap Software Update
  4. If there’s nothing new, you’ll be told just so. Otherwise, you’ll be presented with all the details about the update.
  5. Tap Download and Install
  6. Click here to enlarge
  7. Agree to the Terms and Conditions
  8. Click here to enlarge
  9. IMPORTANT! If you’re low on juice, make sure you plug in! You don’t want your battery to die mid-update! Click here to enlarge
  10. Watch the progress bar! (This part depends on the speed and quality of your 3G or Wi-Fi signal. Don’t be alarmed if it takes a long time, speeds up or slows down, or appears to jump around — be patient.)
  11. Click here to enlarge
  12. Once it’s finished downloading, you’ll be prompted to instal (and restart) your device. If you don’t explicitly hit Later or Install within a few seconds, it will install on your behalf.
  13. Click here to enlarge
  14. Agree to the Terms and Conditions yet again.
  15. Click here to enlarge
  16. Apple will verify the install.
  17. Click here to enlarge
  18. That’s it!
Not only does iOS 5 update OTA, it updates in place using bit-differential (delta) files, so you should get a faster, much more efficient process. For example, there’s no need to restore from backup afterwards or re-download your stuff.

Seriously, once the download finishes it’s amazing quick and smooth. Apple may not have invented OTA updates (Chris swears BlackBerry has had them for ages, and Nokia likely invented them in 1812…) but if this is any indication, they’re doing them right.

    Windows 7 LAN settings
  6. Click OK in both windows.

  4. Drag the original hosts file to your desktop. If Windows needs your permission to continue, click Continue.
  5. Drag the "Copy of hosts" (Windows XP) or "hosts -Copy" (Windows Vista/7) to the desktop.
  6. Right-click "Copy of hosts" (Windows XP) or "hosts -Copy" (Windows Vista/7) and choose Open. You may be prompted to choose the program you want to use to open this file. Double-click Notepad.

  10. Right-click the  "Copy of hosts" (Windows XP) or "hosts -Copy" (Windows Vista/7) file, and choose Rename. Type "hosts" (without quotation marks) and press Enter.
  11. Restart your computer and try connecting to the software update server.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, then the cause is likely out-of-date or incorrectly configured security software. Follow the steps in iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues to resolve the issue.

Finding Your iPhone’s Unique Identifier UDID with or without iTune

Apple has given developers a way to beta test iPhone applications with up-to 100 iPhones. Some developers have already started using this to their advantage by giving their software out as free public betas. However, you must supply a developer with your iPhones UDID (unique device identifier) in order to install these "Ad-hoc" applications on your iPhone.

Each iPhone or iPod Touch has a Unique Device Identifier (UDID), which is a sequence of 40 letters and numbers that is specific to your device. It’s like a serial number but much harder to guess. It will look something like this: 2b6f0cc904d137be2e1730235f5664094b831186.

Why do we need the UDID?

Your iPhone can only install programs that are approved by Apple. Applications in the App Store have been approved by Apple for general distribution, but beta customers get to try the app before it’s in the store. We register your UDID with Apple so they can approve our application especially for your iPhone.

How do I get my UDID?

You can copy/paste your UDID from iTunes or email it directly from your device by using a free app from the App Store.

Email Using the Free App

Install and run Ad Hoc Helper. It will create an email with your UDID. Send it to nobody@example.com.

Copy/Paste from iTunes

  1. Launch iTunes and connect your iPhone.
  2. In the right pane, locate the information about your iPhone, including its name, capacity, software version, serial number, and phone number. Plugged-in-iphone
  3. Reveal the Identifier by clicking on Serial Number:. Clicked-serial-number
  4. Copy the Identifier to your clipboard by choosing EditCopy. Edit-copy
  5. Paste the Identifier into an email to nobody@example.com (You should be able to paste into your mail program or web browser by selecting EditPaste).
Getting UDID without iTunes

Options
A. System profiler.... USB.....iPhone.....use the serial number

B. Install SDK 3.0, then start up xCode, select the phone on the left pane and it will give you the UDID.

C. with pc  goto system information under settings, the goto components, then usb, the you will see the iphone connected that is the 40 digit hex number

D. iphone backup is named "{UDID} - {date}"...store on PC at C:UsersUSERAppDataRoamingApple COmputerMobileSyncBackup

E.  Go to http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/enterprise/
Install Apples "iPhone Configuration Utility" (Windows or MAC) and it will display the UDID and allow you to export that data to a text file for easy copy & paste into your Apple Dev Portal.

Good luck!
